Moving pets

Transporting

  • Pets are never transported on moving vans.
  • It is best that pets travel with the owners so that they can retain a sense of identity.
  • If you travel with a pet, always keep on a leash or in a cage so that they won't bolt outdoors or windows when they become frightened.
  • Always have an identification tag with the pet's name, owner's name and the destination address or that of a trusted friend or relative.
  • If shipping pet by air, make arrangements ahead of time for delivery and pickup.
  • See if pet can can travel in a carrier under a seat in the cabin or travel as air freight.
  • Send smaller pets such as hamsters, gerbils, or tropical fish by air express.
  • Consult veterinarian about sedating your pet for the trip.

Entry requirements

  • If moving across state lines check with the State Veterinarian, State
  • Department of animal Husbandry of destination state.
  • Interstate health certificates must acompany dogs and horses entering nearly all states.
  • Up-to-date rabies innoculation tags attached to collars are required for all but 4 states.
  • Some states require an entry permit issued only by receipt of interstate health certificates
  • A few states inspect transported animals at their borders or airports. Some are conducted by highway patrol officers.

At new home

  • Check with city clerk or town hall for pet control and licensing ordinances.
  • Keep the pet within the new home until it realizes that is more than a temporary residence.
  • Cats should be confined for several weeks within the new home.
  • Make the pet feel at home by using familiar dishes, blanket, toys, or other items.
  • Check with neighbors to determine special problems within the community before letting the pet outdoors.
