Moving plants

Transporting:

  • Consider giving to friends, hospitals and libraries, or sell in a garage sale
  • Professional moving companies will accept if move is not more 150 miles and/or delivery is completed withi 24 hours, no storage is required, and no en route servicing or watering is required of the mover.
  • Check with state federal or state plant protection official in states traveling through for quarantines or plant clearance procedures.
  • Some states have random inspections of plants for pests at their borders.
  • State-or-origin certifications make it easier for inspections of plants.

Care when transporting:

  • Never carry plants in the car trunk.
  • Some plants are susceptible to shock when moving - recovery period is determined by time and distance.
  • Temperatures below 45 degrees F or above 85 degrees for over a hour will kill most plants.
  • Most plants can survive up to 7 to 10 days without watering but should be kept moist when in cartons.
  • Plants can tolerate darkness for up to a week-prevent wilting or sun scald by limiting sun exposure for the first few days.
  • Cuttings of favorite houseplants can propagage a favorite plant.
  • Allow plant to dry 2 weeks before move.
  • On moving day, wrap in cones or cardboard or florist's paper.
  • Secure long limbs or branches by tying in direction of growth.
  • Place upright in high sided container, wedge in place with crumpled paper.
  • When unpacking, put in place similar to one in former home.
